Austin, TX is not only the home of the first documented serial killer in the world and capital of live music, it is also the not-so-secret headquarters of US thrift-store culture. April and her boyfriend Eric run a store for used clothing together – almost a state of paradise especially for her. Because April has a pathological relationship to clothes: she is obsessed with colors, forms and fabrics, with smells and textures. When she suspects Eric of having an affair, her feelings and her style both go off the rails. Amanda Fuller gives a prize-worthy tour de force performance as April: by herself, she carries, drags you through this mirror of the soul, her face alternately telling of passion, obsession, rage, and hate. With FASHIONISTA the exceptional British director Simon Rumley takes his formal eccentricity to an extreme, editing individual levels of time into one another, thus placing a chronology of feelings over that of the events. It is hardly surprising that this disorienting, magnetic, daring trip is then dedicated to the British master director Nicolas Roeg – who will also be producing Simon Rumley’s next project.
