IT STAINS THE SANDS RED
Las Vegas is burning. And for Nick and Molly that means: jump into the sports car and speed off in the direction of the airfield, where an acquaintance is ready to jet away to safety. But it doesn’t work out. First the car breaks down, then Nick is bitten (and dismembered) by a zombie. Molly has only one chance: she has to try to get to the meeting point on foot, which means marching for days through the desert with a zombie on her heels. IT STAINS THE SANDS RED does so many things right: instead of computerized zombie crowds, director Colin Minihan relies on a simple, effective threat scenario. A woman. A zombie. And nothing but desert. Brittany Allen, who can soon also be seen in JIGSAW, is the major discovery of this film: she transforms Molly from a dependent demimonde girl into an involuntary, independent heroine of the post-apocalypse, navigating this seriously shitty situation with verve and wit and inventiveness. IT STAINS THE SANDS RED is one of the best zombie films of the year. A breathtaking thriller with humorous inserts and a surprisingly socio-critical substrate. Splendid!
