MON MON MON MONSTERS
Battlefield high school: straight-A pupil Lin is constantly being tormented by classmates. After he is falsely accused of stealing money, he has to do community service with the bullies in a soup kitchen for the homeless. When the four boys are attacked in the street by a creature, they succeed in overcoming it. They chain up the monster in their hiding place and blatantly act out their sadism on it. Lin has to decide whether to take part in the torture and thus earn the respect of his tormentors or not. What the teenagers don’t know: a second monster has already picked up their scent. The third film directed by the author Giddens Ko is a fast-paced, radical horror film, which takes as its starting point the social hierarchy and pecking order of Taiwanese society, especially among teenagers, to tell of human monsters and monstrous humans. MON MON MON MONSTERS is one of the best Fantastic Films of the year: a wild ride through landscapes of drives and compulsions, an absolute indictment of the brutalization of society, and at the same time a damned entertaining, tremendously exciting, and sometimes shocking thriller, somewhere in between Jack Ketchum’s “The Woman” and Tod Browning’s “Freaks”.
